Boll Weevil
Boll Weevil is one of my favorite old time folks songs due to it’s simple yet haunting melody. While artists like Tex Ritter performed it with a bouncy melody and Leadbelly played it with a bluezy quality, the version I prefer is a more traditional old time version which has a gritty and serious tone to it.
In Part One, we begin with learning the basic melody of Boll Weevil. After getting comfortable with the basic melody, we will move on to Part Two, where we learn chords and bass lines to keep a solid rhythm. Finally, we will get into my improvisational concept of ‘Moodling’ in order to add some advanced phrases without losing the original structure of the song.
Enjoy!
