All strings break eventually (how long they last depends on how often it's played and how much force the player uses), so it's always good to stock up on extras. For peace of mind, I keep a minimum of two ichi-no-ito (silk), four ni-no-ito (tetron), and five san-no-ito (nylon). However, if you prefer every string to be silk strings, it's safe to order more as silk strings break quicker than tetron or nylon. It's important to select the strings type for your particular shamisen. For example, if you have a nagauta shamisen, select strings specifically for nagauta style. Even if you want to learn tsugaru style on a nagauta shamisen (which is perfectly fine to do), you still need nagauta strings because the thickness of those strings match the diameter of the string holes in the shamisen's itomaki (tuning peg). The strings made for a tsugaru shamisen (specifically the ichi no ito, or the first string) is considerably thicker, and won't fit into the hole of a nagauta shamisen's itomaki (without drilling a wider hole). Normally, these shaped itomaki pegs are so thick they either require a lathe or hours of sanding to make the pegs thin enough to fit in the zagane. Doable for a specialist’s workshop, but enormous work for the average person. To make Elite Itomaki easier for you to install, we’ve pre-tapered the sets so the fitting is 75% complete. All you need to do is sand the pegs and drill the string holes! Requirements: Sandpaper (Grit #: 120g, 220g, 320, 400g, 800g. Add 1200g, 1500, and 2000g for higher polish), and drill (1mm and 1.5mm bits for itomaki holes) Warning: Although Elite Itomaki are specially prepared to make home DIY installation faster, they still require great care (ideally with some woodwork experience) to ensure a perfect fit. Achieving the right taper is a delicate process, and it is easy to sand too much. If too much wood is removed, or if sanded unevenly, the itomaki will wobble and slip easily. Q: Ebony-to-Blackwood Upgrade

Every set of Elite Itomaki are made with African Blackwood pegs. Blackwood is harder and more stable than ebony, and thus won’t wear as fast as ebony (which is used for all itomaki pegs). Furthermore, African Blackwood has rich figure and varies from deep brown to black grain as well!
